Every year, on February 4, World Cancer Day is celebrated. The initiative to create this thematic day belongs to the International Union Against Cancer (UICC). The mission is to make timely cancer diagnosis even more accessible and better, and equal approach to the treatment and care of all patients without exception.
Nowadays, the following types of cancer are widely spread: lung, breast, colon, prostate and skin cancer. According to the World Health Organization, one third of cancer deaths are caused by bad habits: tobacco or alcohol use, lack of physical activity. The wrong way of life often entails fatal consequences.
About 30–50% of oncological diseases are preventable if risk factors are excluded. In addition, mortality is reduced by early detection of cancer, timely and appropriate treatment.
Prevention of the oncology development include: rejection of bad habits; physical activity and maintenance of normal body weight; a varied diet that includes fruits and vegetables.
As for early diagnosis, it is very important that a person is aware of the alarming symptoms, notices body signals and consults a doctor in a timely manner. KSMU does not remain aloof from this problem and regularly conducts preventive work in the districts of the region. Young specialists conduct primary examinations and talks with the local population, as well as organize educational events: they talk about risk factors and possible symptoms.
In addition, residents of the Kursk region have the opportunity to undergo a qualitative examination. An oncology center operates in the regional center. The main task of KSMU is the training of qualified personnel. And today more than 80% of the employees of the oncology center are graduates of our university.
