JOSEPH LISTER – FOUNDER OF ANTISEPTIC SURGERY
1st November 2022

On October 27, 2022, Kursk State Medical University hosted a student interdepartmental multidisciplinary conference dedicated to the 195th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Lister, the founder of antiseptic surgery.

The topic of the conference was “Aseptics and Antiseptics in Modern Surgery. Achievements and Problems”.

The student interdepartmental conference was attended by the Head of the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy Doctor of Medical Sciences Professor Bezhin Alexander Ivanovich, Head of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Virology Doctor of Medical Sciences Professor Medvedeva Olga Anatolyevna, Candidate of Medical Sciences Associate Professor of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Virology Efremova Natalia Nikolaevna, Candidate of Medical Sciences Associate Professor of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Virology Shevchenko Alina Vladimirovna, Candidate of Medical Sciences Associate Professor of the Department of General Surgery Novomlinets Yuri Pavlovich.

Doctor of Medical Sciences Professor Bezhin Alexander Ivanovich addressed the participants of the conference with a welcoming speech. He noted that in the conditions of the XXI century the problem of asepsis and antisepsis remains relevant until now. Throughout the surgical pathway, control of infections has been a very difficult and urgent task. Infection complicates the course of the postoperative period, prolongs stay of patients in the hospital, deprives them of their ability to work, leads to disability and even death. Also, in recent decades, there has been a trend towards the emergence of resistant strains of microorganisms to antibiotics, development of infections associated with the provision of medical care (HAI). Therefore, only knowledge of methods to prevent microorganisms from entering the wounds and organs of patients after surgery and methods to combat infection will help to avoid severe consequences for the next generation.

Within the framework of the conference, the reports of the participants of student scientific circles on the following topics were heard:

  1. “History of Antiseptics Development” – Evgenia Alexandrovna Pashina (3rd year, Faculty of Medicine, group 22)
  2. “History of Asepsis Development” – Bredikhina Elina Khuseynovna (3rd year, Faculty of Medicine, group 22)
  3. “Microorganisms in a Modern Surgical Clinic” – Tokareva Maria Yurievna, Savvina Anastasia Yurievna (3rd year, Faculty of Medicine, group 2)
  4. “Modern Aseptics and Antiseptics” – Anna Eduardovna Volobueva (3rd year, Faculty of Medicine, group 14)
  5. “Physical Methods of Antiseptics” – Sevryukova Polina Viktorovna (1st year, Faculty of Medicine, group 26)
  6. “Biological Methods of Antiseptics” – Vyacheslav Igorevich Puchkov (3rd year, Faculty of Medicine, group 1)

Summing up the results of the student interdepartmental multidisciplinary conference, the organizers and the attendees noted the high level and relevance of the presented reports on one of the most important medical problems of the XXI century “Aseptics and Antiseptics in Modern Surgery”.
