SCHOOL OF SURGERY: FROM MENTOR TO SUCCESSOR PROJECT
18th November 2022

On November 11, 2022, Kursk State Medical University launched a project initiated by the Rector of KSMU, Professor V.A. Lazarenko “School of Surgery: from Mentor to Successor”. The project is aimed at training students, residents and cadets of our university in surgical interventions, filigree training of important surgical foundations, without which the understanding of medical traditions, increasing the level of training, development of the necessary professional competencies is basically impossible.

The start of regular work of surgical teams was planned from the early morning according to a pre-determined and approved plan. Preparations for the launch of this project have been thoroughly worked out at all levels of the university management. As expected, the start-up experience allowed us to consider, analyze and adjust the process of work, from “smaller to bigger” and this process was not and will not be one-step. Continuous improvement is the key to quality work.

Ten operational teams of KSMU students of 4-6 years of study began to work under the close supervision of the university teachers. Dermal plastic surgery, abdominal endoscopic and open surgery, urology, cardiovascular surgery (including beating heart surgery), transplantation began their work. In one surgical day only, the following was performed: skin plastic surgery of the defect with a U-shaped sliding flap, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, prosthetics of carotid arteries, wedge resection of the small intestine, Boari surgery, kidney transplantation, prosthetics of the ascending part of the aorta, pulmonectomy, laminectomy, tendon suture. In addition to surgical operations, in the process of intervention, future doctors monitor the effectiveness of the anaesthetic manual, manage vital functions during the operation, monitor work rules of the operating nurse.

“School of Surgery: from a Mentor to a Successor” is a long-term project that made it possible to perform monthly surgical interventions on live pigs at the Research Institute of Experimental Medicine at the premises of the laboratory of experimental surgery and oncology with the participation of students and residents, to improve and deeply engage in the practice of surgical interventions under the guidance of mentors – teachers, practicing doctors. The project will make it possible to transfer experience and knowledge from senior students to their younger colleagues using the mentoring principle. The continuity of generations and experience is something that is indispensable in medical practice.
