INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES – DECEMBER 3, 2021
3rd December 2021

On December 13, 2006, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which laid the legislative foundation for the concept of an accessible environment at the international level. The International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3rd draws more attention to the problems of persons with disabilities, namely: the protection of their rights and well-being, the socialization of persons with disabilities and the promotion of inclusion principles.

According to the Federal Register of Disabled Persons as of October 1, 2021, the number of disabled people is 10.7 million, 6% of which are children and 62% are pensioners (https://sfri.ru/). The vast majority of them have a disability of the second and third groups, in the aggregate they make up 84%. The presented statistical data indicate an increase in the number of persons with disabilities and health limitations. The Russian state provides all possible assistance and support to people with disabilities, Russian socially oriented non-profit organizations have developed a number of effective practices and mechanisms for providing voluntary assistance to people with disabilities: car volunteering, theaters for children with disabilities, social and labor rehabilitation centers that allow people with health limitations to show themselves in sports tournaments.

At Kursk State Medical University, 107 students with disabilities receive higher education, 29 students with disabilities receive secondary vocational education. The ideas and principles of inclusion are supported and spread within the walls of our university, namely: our students are supported, special conditions for education are created upon request, and comprehensive support is provided. Every year, the Department of Social Work and Life Safety outlines the track of interaction between students and citizens with disabilities and health limitations by organizing events within volunteer teams and scientific and practical conferences. The teaching staff, together with the students, is systematically looking for ways to improve the environment and personality through research work and social design.
